Becoming a coach on Badminton Village
Badminton Village is where serious students find good coaches. Apply once, manage your calendar in one place, and get paid automatically — no chasing bank transfers.
How to apply
The application takes around ten minutes. We review every application manually — you'll hear back within three business days.
- 1
Submit your application
Go to /coaches/register. You'll need your name, email, location, coaching level, and a brief description of your experience. You can also upload qualification certificates at this stage.
- 2
We verify your credentials
Our team checks any qualifications you've listed (BWF, Badminton New Zealand, or equivalent national bodies). If we need more information we'll email you. Level 1 accreditation or equivalent is the minimum standard.
- 3
Connect your Stripe account
Once approved, you'll be prompted to connect or create a Stripe Express account. This takes a few minutes and requires a New Zealand or Japanese bank account. Stripe handles identity verification on our behalf.
- 4
Complete your profile and go live
Add your photo, bio, lesson options, and availability. When you're happy, hit 'Publish profile'. Your listing appears in search results immediately.
Your coach profile
Your profile is your public listing. Students browse it before booking. Fill every field — incomplete profiles rank lower in search.
Photo
A clear headshot. Students are much more likely to book a coach with a photo.
Bio
Two or three sentences about your coaching style, experience, and who you coach best.
Qualifications
BWF/BNZ accreditations, national ranking history, club affiliations. We verify Level 1+ before listing.
Lesson options
Private (1-on-1), semi-private (2–4), group. Set a price and duration for each.
Skill levels
Tick the levels you coach: beginner, intermediate, advanced, competitive. Students filter by this.
Location
The courts or clubs you primarily coach at. Students see coaches near them first.
Availability calendar
In your coach dashboard, go to Calendar and block out the slots you're available to coach. Students can only book slots you've marked as open. You can set recurring weekly availability (e.g. Monday mornings) or manage individual days. Buffer time between lessons is set in Settings → Scheduling.
Bookings made by students lock that slot. You'll receive an email and push notification for every new booking. You can decline within 24 hours — after that, the booking is confirmed and cancelling attracts a fee.
Discovery
How students find you
Students search for coaches by location, skill level, lesson type, and price range. Your listing appears in results when you match their filters and have availability in the next 14 days. Higher-rated coaches and Featured coaches appear nearer the top. Reviews from completed lessons accumulate on your profile automatically.
You also get a shareable profile URL (badmintonvillage.com/coaches/your-name) that you can post to social media, club noticeboards, or your own website.
Getting paid — Stripe Connect
All coach payments flow through Stripe Connect. You'll need a Stripe Express account linked to a valid bank account before you can receive funds.
You set your lesson price
You decide your rate per session. Badminton Village does not cap or suggest prices.
Platform fee
A percentage of each lesson fee is retained by Badminton Village. The exact rate is shown in your coach dashboard under Settings → Fees.
You keep the rest
Net earnings are transferred to your Stripe Express account within two business days of the lesson being confirmed.
No monthly subscription
There is no fee to be listed. You only pay the platform fee when you earn.
First-lesson discounts & Featured tier
First-lesson discount
In Settings → Pricing, you can offer a percentage discount on a student's first lesson with you. The discount is visible on your profile and in search results. It comes out of your earnings — the platform fee applies to the original price, not the discounted amount.
Featured tier
Featured coaches appear at the top of search results, on the homepage, and in curated email campaigns to students. Featured is a paid monthly subscription. You can upgrade in Settings → Featured and cancel any time. It doesn't affect payout rates.
Quick FAQ
- Do I need a BWF qualification?
- You need at least a national-level equivalent — BWF Level 1, Badminton NZ Level 1, or a recognised coaching certificate from your country's badminton body. We review each application individually.
- Can I coach at multiple venues?
- Yes. Add all the courts you coach at in your profile. Students searching near any of those venues will see you.
- What if a student cancels last minute?
- Our cancellation policy protects coaches. Cancellations inside 24 hours attract a 50% cancellation fee paid to you. You can set a stricter policy in your coach settings.
- Can I pause my listing without losing my profile?
- Yes. Toggle 'Pause listing' in your coach dashboard. Your profile is hidden from search but your data, reviews, and calendar are preserved.
- How do taxes work?
- You are responsible for declaring coach income in your jurisdiction. Badminton Village provides annual earnings summaries in your dashboard. We do not withhold tax.
